I love the candid aspect of this image. The young girl invites us into her lush, green world by the simple act of being absorbed in nature. We can’t see her face, but it doesn’t seem to matter. What matters is the action.
Derek has framed the action very well. He has placed the subject right in the middle, which normally does not work from a composition stand point, however, he has made this work well. The garden frames the subject very well and leads our eyes into the action.
The lighting is soft and cool. I would love to see the white balance warmed just a fraction, but it’s not a huge problem if it stays as is. The cooler white balance works okay with subdued lighting. To create more realistic lighting conditions you could simply shoot a grey card and set the white balance to the data given off from the grey card.
A really good shot.
