Judge’s Feedback:

This image that Julie has taken is not only gloomy but it feels a little intimidating. Perhaps the grey clouds and the boats sitting helplessly on the water feel that way due to the overwhelming, inescapable weather coming quickly this way.

The prohibited sign adds to the sense of drama and gloom. Placed right in the middle, the sign is uncompromising and unmistakable. The fact that it’s right in the middle shows there was not much politeness to this image, this adds to the sense of eerie gloom.

The tone and colour increase our sense of hopelessness about the scene. Effectively dark and only pockets of light here work successfully to enhance the story. There is no way out. Even the reeds on the first foreground line hang helplessly over to one side.

A shot well done. Congratulations Julie.
