August 2015: Focus Ezine Competition Results

Winning Photo

Theme : Morning Landscapes

Tim Roberts

Sunrise at Oxley Common

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 , F8, 1/1000, ISO 100, 13.2mm

Judge’s Feedback:

Congratulations to Tim Roberts

This photo is stunning. The morning light through the mist makes it feel like we’re really there, perhaps freezing cold, warming our hands on a mug of hog chocolate as we hold the shutter cable tentatively, waiting for the sun to rise and stay at the right position. Perhaps I’ve lived in a cold climate for too long!

No matter what you imagine, this image epitomizes the stillness, gentleness and serenity of a morning sunrise. The mist makes the landscape scene look beautiful.

Tim’s composition has been thought through carefully. The negative space (sky) occupies the first, top third of the frame. The middle section is filled up by the gentle, misty landscape and the bottom third is composed of loads of shadow and non distinct elements.

Tim has used his camera well too. He’s used F8 which is nice for a medium distance scene. He’s used 1000th of a second probably due to the brightness of the sun and 13mm to keep in line with landscape photography rules of a wide angle. He’s also spot metered which is fine too.

This is a beautiful photo and one we’re proud to call this months’ winner.

Well done Tim.

    Well what can I say?
Certainly all are great photos. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to spend too much time for the last comp and just as well, with that class of photography, I would not have stood a chance.

    Well done to all!

    Cheers Derek.
