Neil has created a very artistic, almost commercial, photograph. The colours are beautiful and the fanning out of the subject makes for a very pleasing composition. The composition works so well due to the simplicity in the photo. There are no distracting elements competing in the background. Everything is very straight forward.
The black background helps to create the simplicity. Black backgrounds can work so well with subjects that are very bold and bright, and of course, colourful. This is a lovely shot because of the colourful elements and black background working so nicely together.
It can be very challenging to capture pure black in the studio. Often, a control and understanding of light and light absorption is whats needed. A lot of the time the black is enhanced in the post processing stage.
Neil’s exposure is well done. There is nothing under or over exposed. When normal subjects are underexposed colour loss is inevitable. (You need light to reflect colour). When the colours are bold and vibrant like this we can see that the image has been properly exposed.
Exposure is one of the secrets to capturing vibrant colour. If your subject is vibrant in colour yet the final image is not, then check to see if your exposure is correct or not. There is always a strong relationship between the two.
So well done Neil!
